Here we go!

I'm crossing my fingers:

Download it here!

Please please please give me feedback on things you like AND don't like!
I put up the link right below the PayPal-button also!

So, what's up with this release:

- It has a vastly improved rule/Rss-engine, and I think the GUI is more understandable than earlier.
- Option to automatically start Newsleecher or some other application (if it's not already running) when a file is downloaded.
- Keeps better track of already downloaded files, so no duplicates here.
- The fileorganizer-tab is still in Beta, but it should work pretty well..
Keep in mind though that if a avi-file (or other) is called, let's say ar-heroes.S01E13.avi, it WILL make a folder with the name ar-heroes in your designated folder. Still trying to work out the kinks on this one.
- The autounzip started bugging at the last minute, so I had to leave that disabled for this release. Coming up in 2.1b.

- Oh and remember to read the instructions for RSS-feeds carefully on NZBs.org if you're using that site. They did some changes, so you need to add some gibberish at the end of the rss-feed url.

The beta expires on June 9th by the way. It's a way for me to ensure that noone is running old crappy software, and also to put some pressure on myself :)

So what's in the pipeline you ask?
- Well, the downloader seems to work just fine, so not many changes on that. I'm implementing some statistics, but that's mostly just for kicks.

FileOrganizer
The fileorganizer will be tuned heavily.
- It will match downloaded shows with the foldernames already in your destination folder to see if it finds some matches
- The NZBFeeder will work as a bridge between the downloaded NZB and the usenet application of choice. Actually parsing the NZB-file, checking how many files are expected the filenames and so on. When it notices that the nzb is done downloading, and extracted, it will know where it ended up and then search a couple of NZB-sites to find the category it belongs to. You may guess the rest? Yes, move the content to the correct folder to keep your downloads neat and tidy :)

AutoUnZip
The AutoUnZip feature is a fairly small piece of the puzzle, so I wouldn't put a major release increment on that implementation, but still it's neat having that several NZB-sites offer their NZB-files in zips.

UseNet support?
I've been playing around with actually connecting to usenet servers and doing the downloading myself. Maybe this is where I'll end up.. But it's going to take alot of work, so in the meantime just stick with NewsLeecher or whatever you like :)

Questions, comments, feedback, bugs. All important for me to continue making a good application! :)

Good luck :)

is there a way to use it with feeds from newzbin.com (where a login is needed) if this is not the case, it would be really nice if you could integrate it :)

a GUI related thing: resizing the window "add new feed" has no effect on the inputfield length.

due to the login issue i was not yet able to test the functionality :( ...but i'll have a look at free NZB pages within the next days.

Check out www.nzbs.org. Great site.
Thanks for the feedback. The login-functionality is something I've actually been looking into. The problem with newzbin.com is that the rss-feed itself doesn't provide any actual link to the NZB-file. That would then involve parsing of HTML, which I feel is a little out of the scope for this application for the time being :)

Program looks really promising :)

Is there a way to compile this on Mac OS X?

Is the source code available?

This would be the first application of it's kind on the Mac platform!

Thanks
Martin

Hi Martin!
I will look into possibilities on compiling it for Mac OS X. Since it's coded on .NET platform, there isn't any native support.. But sure, it would be nice to support several OSes.. Not my primary priority though..

Unfortunatly I don't have any plans for releasing the source code at the moment.

Glad you like it :)

can your program make sure a user is logged into newzbin?

Would be cool to have a plugin in vista media center that lets you search and download nzb's, and then let your program do the rest. Authenticated newzbin rss search feeds are not possible, only something like this:

http://v3.newzbin.com/search/?q=lost&searchaction=Search&fpn=p&group=alt.binaries.tv+alt.binaries.multimedia&category=8&area=-1&u_nfo_posts_only=0&u_url_posts_only=0&u_comment_posts_only=0&u_v3_retention=8640000&sort=ps_edit_date&order=desc&areadone=-1&feed=rss

Which only lets you download nzb's if your logged into newzbin

Yngve B. Nilsen said...

Does the NZB-link in the feed open a direct link to the NZB-file, or do you need to further click something to download? Also, the link is nested inside the description-tag of the rss, which means I need to do some parsing of the feed.. This really hurts the dynamic of the engine. I guess I could look into adding some 'Advanced options' to the add feed box...

I am, however, working on posibility to add a feed that requires login. I might even add presets for the most well-known feeds out there.

I have never looked at plugins for Windows Vista, but it sounds like an idea I'd like to explore.

I'll post a frequently asked questions post one of the next days to gather up and answer the questions you guys ask me in the comments. :)

looks like my rss link didnt fully appear.

Here is an example of the the first result in the rss feed (you can set the rentention in the search feed so it doesnt have to be new shows only like most feeds atm). I just searched lost- the feed works as long as your logged into v3.newzbin, and when you click on nzb below it downloads the nzb (for this example the nzb link says - http://v3.newzbin.com/browse/post/2889630/nzb/)

Can't wait to try this out. I've been using the abandoned program TVTad for a long time, but a couple of bugs in it require consant maintenance to keep it going. Sounds like you have made exactly what I'm looking for.

can yo add support for v3 newzbin rss feeds? as other nzb feeds are pretty much worthless if you dont have you dont have your pc on within 24 hrs of the show being on. I was away for the weekend and tvnzb or nzbs.org dont have lost in their feeds anymore, while with v3 newzbin I can set search feeds that will give me an rss feed with every episode of lost for months

Yngve B. Nilsen said...

regarding NewzBin v3, I'll try. This may lead to some advanced options, so I need to think about it a bit.. I'll get back to you before the weekend.

this app seems great!

How about automating the Fileorganizer also? That would rock!

Yngve B. Nilsen said...

Yeah, it's going to automized in the next release :)

are there any updates coming?

Hello,

Really really nice tool you have there i've been using it for over 1 month now and it's working well. (out side the fact that I can't exit the tool outside of the TaskManager :P)

The problem now is that since yesterday it is not working at all anymore. it is crashing at startup.

I've downloaded the new XP service Pack 3 it's probably because of that.

When using the program, occasionally all my desktop icons flicker? Do you know why that is?

For example, it happens when I add an rss feed

hsj said...

I've been setting up feeds from nzbs.org and NZBFeeder always says "This freed has produced 0 hit(s)". I thought maybe the feeds I'm using aren't updated that regularly so I tried subscribing to EVERYTHING on nzbs.org but it always says 0 hits, what am I doing wrong?

Yngve B. Nilsen said...

hsj:
Did you read the announcement on the RSS-page for nzbs.org, stating the string you need to add to the URL?

Everyone:
I'm getting close to a new release.. Stay tuned over the weekend for (hopefully) a new and improved release! :)

hsj said...

yes, all the feeds I set up had the string appended

Yngve B. Nilsen said...

hsj: did you check that your rules are set up correctly, and hooked up to the feed?

hsj said...

now I'm getting the crash errors others seem to be getting.

When I start the program I get this:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

this is most likely happening because of bad settings. I uninstalled and reinstalled and when I started program again my old settings were still in place, is there any way to reset the settings?

People keep asking about newzbin, but why not use NZBIndex.nl? It's free, no login, and allows you to create your own RSS feeds in a snap. There is no direct download link in the feed, but if you click on the main headline, there is a "Create NZB" button/link that does download the nzb.

Also, June 9th coming up quick :) Great product, btw.
